Beecher students selling calendars as a service learning project

Beecher Elementary service learning students are selling 2011 calendars that highlight historical Elmira landmarks. All photographs featured in the calendar were taken last year by fifth-grade students either during a trolley tour or on one of several walking tours of the area. All proceeds will be donated to the Near Westside Neighborhood Association.

This project was part of a Learn and Serve grant. One requirement of service learning is to integrate curriculum into service projects. In this case, the students not only participated in the project but also learned about the local historic landmarks and applied the gleaned knowledge to their work.

Calendars are $8 each and can be purchased at Beecher Elementary School. To purchase a calendar or for more information, contact Jason Manwaring at (607) 735-3501, ext. 8175 or jamanwaring@elmiracityschools.com.

Meet our New Parent Partner

Message from Lee Fisher, EFA's New Parent Partner:

Last Spring, I was hired as EFA's Parent Partner. Over the months, I have been trying to meet everyone. It is a big school with lots of activity and I know there are still some teachers and staff that I have not met. So, I thought it would be nice if I sent out an email telling you a little bit about myself and where you can find me.

I have been married to a wonderful man, named Bill for 22 years. We have a daughter, Liz who is now in 10th grade and besides being a great student she is a passionate dancer. My husband and I both graduated from Elmira College. Seventeen years ago, we moved from Florida back to Elmira (no we are not crazy - we love the seasons). Over the years, I have been a Manager in a real estate office (Doylestown, PA), the Associate Director of the American Water Ski Association (Winter Haven, FL), a Pre-School Teacher with Happy House Nursery School (Elmira, NY) and currently I am the Office Manager at the Leslie School of Dance Studios (Elmira Heights/Watkins Glen, NY). I also, have been very lucky to have had time to volunteer with the Junior League, Girl Scouts, First Presbyterian Church, Elmira Downtown Development, Arnot Art Museum and for 6 years was the Hendy Building & Planning Parent Representative. My life changed, eleven years ago when I co-founded a local dance company, New Heights Dance Theater (Elmira Heights, NY). One of our main tasks is to puts on two full productions (Nutcracker in Motion and Walking on the Horizon) each year at the Clemens Center. I am currently the President & Production Director for the organization. Not sure if you can tell, but I love kids and working with people.

Please feel free to contact me if you think there is anything I can help you with. I am in room 151A (inside Mr. Tobin's office). I am in school a few hours each day Tuesday - Friday.

Thank you.

Message from Mr. Henderson:
Just for all of your information, the back doors of EFA are being forced open by students during school and after practices in the evening to gain access to EFA. These doors are loced when thi happens and we are working on a solution to make sure they cannot be compromised. I would like to ask that we make an effort to change the minds of these students to help with this process. When we make the doors stronger and more rigid and the students still want to break into the school then they will literally breat the doors. I just want everyone to be aware of this so we can be proactive.
